Bankroll rules for following one pick a day
A service that posts one main pick a day gives you a clean routine and a trap. The routine is that every day has the same shape. The trap is that a low number of bets per day feels slow, so a bad run feels unusual when it is not. This article sets out rules for a bankroll that follows one pick a day, using only arithmetic you can check.
What a normal losing run looks like
Suppose a bet wins 52.4% of the time at -110, which is the break-even rate. A simulation of 100 such bets produced at least one run of five losses in a row about 73% of the time. A single run of five has a probability of about 2.4% starting from a given bet, but over 100 bets it is the norm. A service with a better rate still has these runs, only less often.
Five rules
- Fix the unit. A small percentage of the bankroll, written down. 1% is a common starting point; the exact number is yours. See choosing a unit size.
- Keep betting money separate. A dedicated amount you can afford to lose entirely. Keeping betting money in its own account says why.
- Set a stop in advance. For example, a loss of a fixed number of units in a month ends the month. A stop written down in advance has the reasoning.
- Skip when the price is below the minimum. The minimum price in each post is a rule you did not have to invent. See the minimum price line.
- Do not chase. After a loss the next pick has the same stake. A recovery bet is a new bet with the same odds against it.
The membership is part of the bankroll
Include the plan price in what you are willing to spend. A Day plan at $19.99, a Week plan at $99.99 or a Month plan at $299.99 are all costs you pay whatever the picks do. Count them as money spent on the entertainment, separate from the betting bankroll, and do not try to make the picks pay for the plan.
Reviewing without overreacting
Review on a calendar, not after each result. Once a week, write down the price you got, the result and the stake. After thirty bets, look at the whole list, and keep in mind that thirty is still a small sample. Reviewing without over-reacting to noise explains the schedule.
When to stop
Stop when the stake stops being an amount you chose calmly. Signs include betting more than your unit, betting to recover, hiding the losses from people close to you, or feeling unable to skip a day. If any of those apply, step away and read where to get help.
A worked example
Take a bankroll of $1,000 and a unit of 1%, or $10 risked per bet. A run of five losses costs $50, and the bankroll drops to $950. That is survivable and unremarkable. Now take the same run with a 10% unit of $100: the loss is $500, and the bankroll is cut in half. The pick sequence is identical. The unit decided the damage.
