Units and stake sizing when you follow a pick service

When a pick service says "1 unit", it is saying the stake in a common currency, so that a $10 bettor and a $500 bettor can talk about the same bet. The unit is yours to define, and the service does not know your bankroll. That is why the stake size is your responsibility on any platform. A posted pick carries a price and a minimum price. It does not carry an instruction on how much to risk.

What a unit is

A unit is a chosen amount, usually a small percentage of the money set aside for betting. If your betting money is $1,000 and your unit is 1%, a unit is $10. If the money is $2,000, the unit is $20. See what a unit is, and why anybody bothers.

How to choose it

  • Start from money you can lose entirely without affecting rent, bills or savings. That amount is the bankroll.
  • Pick a unit small enough that a long losing run does not change your life. A losing run of five or six is routine for any service.
  • Write the number down before you start. A unit decided after a win or a loss tends to drift.

Choosing a unit size goes through the trade-offs in more detail.

Why the size should stay the same

A pick service that posts one main pick a day gives you one decision a day. Varying the stake with your mood turns that into a second, unrecorded decision that dominates the result. Raising stakes after wins and after losses are the two most common ways it goes wrong. See letting stakes follow confidence and raising stakes to recover a loss.

Same pick, different resultsTwo members follow the same five picks, each at -110. One risks 1 unit each time. The other risks 1 unit, then 2 after a loss, then 3. After a run of win, loss, loss, win, loss the second member has risked much more on the losing days and ends further behind, using identical picks. The stake rule did that, not the picks.

Units and a Whop membership

The membership price is separate from your unit. A Week plan at $99.99 or a Month plan at $299.99 is a cost of entertainment, and it comes out of the same budget you use to decide whether you can afford to play. Count it before you set your unit. If the plan price already stretches your budget, the stakes on top of it will, too.

BetsBeats posts a price and a minimum price. It does not tell you what to stake, and it does not know whether you will bet at all. If you do, the stake is a number you chose in advance, applied the same way every day, and you record the price you actually received.

If the unit feels too small

A unit that feels dull is usually a sign it is the right size. Betting is entertainment spending, and the excitement of larger stakes comes with a greater cost when a losing run arrives. If you notice yourself wanting to raise the unit, wait a month and see whether the want survives a week of results. If it does, change the number on paper, not in the moment, and keep the new number for at least as long.

Units hide the dollar amount"Up 8 units" sounds modest until the unit is $200. Convert to dollars regularly, and stop if the dollar figure is not one you are comfortable losing. This is entertainment spending for adults aged 21 or over, and every pick can lose.
