Altitude and the total in baseball

Here is the part that decides it. Denver and Mexico City. Thinner air means a ball carries further and lungs recover slower, and both effects are permanent rather than situational.

The total is a bet on how much both teams score together, and in baseball it behaves like this: Moves before the lineup card is public, because the starting pitcher is the total and his identity leaks before it is announced. Wind in a small park is worth a real piece of the number on its own.

Where the two meet Coors Field is the single most distinctive venue in American sport, and its total is set differently from every other park.

The league's own contribution: There is no clock. A game ends when it ends, and the home team does not bat in the ninth when it is already ahead — which quietly removes half an inning of scoring from roughly half of all unders.

Which is where it goes wrong. It is the most-known park effect in existence, which is exactly why there is nothing left in knowing it. And on this market in particular: Everybody's instinct is the under, because a low-scoring game feels more predictable than a high-scoring one. The market knows this, and prices it.

What the published price did in MLB

2,496 games in MLB that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between March 26, 2026 and October 29, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

How they ended

Over 3,339 finished games in MLB whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

WhatHow oftenOut ofShare
Went past regulation2463,3397.4%

137 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
