Getting started

What a bet actually is: stake, price, return, profit

A bet is an exchange of a fixed amount now for a conditional amount later. The stake is what you hand over. The price is the rate at which the stake is converted if the named outcome happens. The return is the total that comes back, and the profit is the return minus the stake. If the outcome does not happen, the return is zero and the loss is the whole stake.

Four words are needed because the money moves in two directions and people habitually confuse the two. Your stake leaves your balance the moment the bet is accepted, whatever happens afterwards, so it is already spent from the book's point of view. The price only ever determines the size of the payment coming back, which is why every quoted number is meaningless until you know whether it includes your stake or not.

One bet, four numbers Stake 50 at a price of +150. If it wins, the profit is 75 and the return is 125 — the 50 you staked plus the 75 it earned. If it loses, the return is 0 and you are down 50. The price never changed; only which of the two branches happened.

The stake leaves the balance at acceptance, not at kick-off, and a bet that is later voided returns it rather than never having taken it. This matters for anybody watching a balance during a weekend: the number shown is money not currently committed, which is a different figure from the money at stake.

That is also the expensive part. People quote returns and profits interchangeably. Somebody who says a bet paid 125 may mean 125 came back on a 50 stake, or that 125 was won on top of it — a difference of the entire stake, and the ambiguity always resolves in the more impressive direction when it is being reported rather than calculated.

What to do with it. For every bet, write down all four numbers before placing it: stake, price, return if it wins, and the loss if it does not. If any of the four is unclear, the bet is not yet understood.
