Why hockey totals barely move
Almost every game is priced between 5.5 and 6.5. Scoring rates are remarkably stable across teams and across the season.
Low-scoring sports have low variance in expected totals. The difference between the highest and lowest-scoring NHL teams is a fraction of a goal a game, which is not enough to move a number much.
Goaltending and back-to-backs move it more than team offence does, because a backup goalie changes the expected goals against by more than any forward line changes goals for.
The problem arrives next. Readers watch for the total to move and it rarely does, so they conclude nothing is happening. The movement is in the price beside it.
What to do with it. Track the price attached to the total rather than the total itself, which is where hockey's information is.

1,280 games in the NHL that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 26, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

1 game landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so it is in the count it is out of and in neither result.
The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
