Verification · what can actually be checked

Verification

A guarantee about billing versus one about results

One concerns something the seller controls and can therefore promise. The other concerns the outcome of a sporting event, which nobody controls and nobody can promise.

Under consumer law an outcome guarantee in a game of chance is a prohibited claim rather than an exaggeration, because it asserts a certainty that cannot exist and cannot be assessed by the buyer before purchase.

Two sentences, one checkable 'A losing day does not consume a day you paid for' can be verified against your own account within a week. 'This pick will win' can be verified by nobody, before or afterwards, in any circumstance.

Billing guarantees are genuinely valuable and worth looking for. They shift a real risk from buyer to seller, and they are checkable, which is precisely what makes them worth something.

That is also the expensive part. Both kinds are presented in the same register and the same typeface, so a reader reassured by the checkable one is being invited to accept the other alongside it.

What to do with it. Sort every promise into 'about how I am charged' or 'about what happens in the game', and only weigh the first.
