A betting spreadsheet: the columns to keep and the formulas that fill them
A bet log needs the date, sport, market, selection, line, the price you took, the stake, the result and the closing price. Four more columns are formulas: decimal price, profit, units and a running total. Filled in for every bet, with the price recorded at the time of the bet, that is the whole record.
A ready-made sheet with these columns is available on the bet tracker page, for an email address.
The input columns
You type these in. The reasoning for each is in what to write down for every bet.
- A: Date. The day you placed the bet, not the day of the event.
- B: Sport or league.
- C: Market. Spread, moneyline, total, prop.
- D: Selection. The side and, for spreads and totals, the line.
- E: Line. Kept apart from the selection so you can sort by it.
- F: Price taken. In American odds, as shown on the slip.
- G: Stake. In money.
- H: Result. W, L, P (push), V (void).
- I: Closing price. The price for the same side and line when the market closed.
The formula columns
These use row 2 as the first bet. Copy them down the sheet.
Pushes and voids give a profit of zero because the stake is returned. A win at -110 on a stake of 20 gives 20 × (1.909 − 1) = 18.18, and a win at +150 gives 20 × 1.5 = 30.
The closing line columns
Two more columns turn the price log into a closing line value log, the method in the cents and probability points article.
Positive means the market moved toward your side after you bet. Leave the cell empty if you did not capture a closing price, and the average will skip it.
Totals to keep above the log
- Bets decided: =COUNTIF(H:H,"W")+COUNTIF(H:H,"L")
- Record: wins, losses, pushes and voids as four counts.
- Total profit: =SUM(K:K)
- Total staked: =SUMIF(H:H,"<>V",G:G) (stakes on all bets except voids, with pushes included)
- ROI: total profit divided by total staked. The convention is explained in the ROI article.
Habits that make the sheet useful
Fill the row at the time of the bet and the closing price afterwards, because memory improves prices. Never overwrite a past row to correct it: add a note instead, so the log is a record and not a rewrite. Keep the value of one unit in a single cell and note the date you change it. Do not delete losing rows. Add a column for any tag you will want to filter on later, such as the reason for the bet, so that a review can group them. Review on a schedule rather than after each result, as the review cadence article explains.
Start the log. The bet tracker page has the sheet with these columns and formulas already set up.
