Active: what it does and does not guarantee
The status on 3,653 of 4,504 licence records, or 81 per cent. It means the permission is currently in force and has not been surrendered, suspended, revoked or allowed to lapse. It is the baseline, not an achievement.
Everything else on this list is an exception, which is why Active carries so little information on its own. Four in five records have it, so knowing that a licence is active narrows the field by almost nothing — the useful reading is always of the whole account, including the records that are NOT active.
Active is also not the same as trading. A company can hold a live licence and have shut its site, and the register will keep saying Active until somebody surrenders it.
That is also the expensive part. Reading only the Active rows is how a history disappears. The rows that changed status are the ones that describe what happened to the business.
What to do with it. Read every row on the account, not the ones that match what you were hoping to see.
