Overtime and the spread in the WNBA
Most of what gets said about this is downstream of one detail. A WNBA overtime adds five minutes of live scoring to a total that was priced for forty.
The spread is a handicap that makes an uneven game an even bet, and in the WNBA it behaves like this: A short schedule means the market's rating of a team is younger and less settled than an NBA equivalent.
The league's own contribution: Four ten-minute quarters against the NBA's twelve, so totals sit roughly forty points lower for a comparable standard of play.
What follows from that is less comfortable. Almost every posted spread settles after overtime, and almost every reader prices the forty minutes they watched. And on this market in particular: A spread that moves after you bet does not change your bet, but it does tell you the market disagreed with you and got more confident about it.
