An injury report and a player prop in college football

This is simpler than it is usually made to sound. A published report is priced within minutes. What moves a number is the gap between what the report says and what turns out to be true.

A player prop is a bet on one person's output rather than on the result, and in college football it behaves like this: Starters sit in the fourth quarter of a rout, which is exactly the game in which their numbers looked likely to be huge.

Where the two meet Questionable means something different in each league, and in some it is used tactically rather than medically.

The league's own contribution: The clock stops after every first down until the chains are set, which adds possessions and inflates totals against a professional game with the same score.

The problem arrives next. The bet you want is rarely on the injured player's team. It is on the market having over-corrected for one name. And on this market in particular: A prop is correlated with the game state in ways the price often does not fully carry: a decided game changes what every player on the field is trying to do, and usually removes the minutes or the attempts the number was built on.

How they ended

Over 1,299 finished games in College Football whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

WhatHow oftenOut ofShare
Went past regulation641,2994.9%

5 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
