Letting stakes follow confidence

Sizing a bet by how sure you feel means the largest stakes land on the opinions held most strongly. Confidence is the least reliable thing a bettor reports about themselves, and it tracks recency rather than edge.

Feeling certain and being right are different quantities that correlate weakly. Certainty rises after wins and after vivid recent evidence, neither of which is information about the price in front of you.

What it does to a record Large stakes on the 'locks' and small ones on the coin flips, repeated across a season, produces a profit-and-loss driven almost entirely by stake size rather than by selection. The record then says nothing about the picks at all.

Varying stakes by a genuine, measured edge is a real method — that is what Kelly describes. The difference is whether the number comes from arithmetic or from a feeling, and only one of those is checkable afterwards.

The problem arrives next. It feels like using information, which is why it is so hard to give up. Flat staking feels like refusing to use what you know.

What to do with it. Stake flat until you have several hundred logged bets showing that your confidence levels actually separate outcomes.
