How a shootout goal counts

One goal, added to the winner's total, regardless of how many attempts were converted during the shootout.

A result has to be recorded as a hockey score, and the convention awards a single goal to the winner. It is a scoring rule rather than a description of events.

How it settles a total A 2-2 game won in a shootout settles 3-2. A total of 5.5 goes over on one successful attempt, with no hockey having been played to produce it.

Sixty-minute markets exclude it entirely, which is the main practical reason those markets exist.

What follows from that is less comfortable. It converts a large share of unders into overs at the last possible moment, and the mechanism is invisible to anybody pricing sixty minutes of hockey.

What to do with it. Check whether your total includes overtime and the shootout before betting an under near the line.

What the published price did in the NHL

1,280 games in the NHL that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 26, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

1 game landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so it is in the count it is out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
