Why −1.5 is harder than the price makes it look

A one-run game is the most common outcome in baseball, and the home team stops batting when ahead. A team that wins sixty per cent of its games wins by two or more far less often than sixty per cent.

The scoring rate is low and the distribution of margins is tight, so a large share of wins are by exactly one run. Requiring two removes the most common winning margin from the bet.

What the price is paying for −1.5 at +150 looks generous next to a −180 moneyline on the same team. The extra return is the price of the one-run wins, and one-run wins are roughly a third of all results.

It runs both ways: +1.5 on an underdog is correspondingly short, because losing by exactly one is common and the bet survives it.

The problem arrives next. A card of run lines reads like a card of value because every price is longer than the moneyline beside it. Most of them are the same favourite asked to do something materially harder.

What to do with it. Compare the run-line price to the moneyline price as a pair, and ask what share of that team's wins are by one run.

What the published price did in MLB

2,496 games in MLB that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between March 26, 2026 and October 29, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

How they ended

Over 3,339 finished games in MLB whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

137 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
