What the hook is

The hook — The half point on the end of a line. −3.5 has one; −3 does not.

It removes the possibility of a push, which converts a refund into either a win or a loss. Whether that is worth paying for depends entirely on the number underneath.

The same hook, two values The hook on 3 in the NFL spans the most common margin in the sport. The hook on 8 spans a fraction of that. Both are half a point and both are often charged at the same rate.

In basketball, where the distribution is smooth, the hook is worth roughly the same small amount at every number.

That is also the expensive part. It is bought and sold at a standard price in a sport where its value is anything but standard, which is where the entire opportunity in this market lives.

What to do with it. Only pay for the hook at key numbers, and check the alternate ladder to see what the market is charging.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
