What taking points is

Taking points — Backing the underdog with the handicap added. A +7 underdog can lose by six and the bet still wins.

The points compensate for the expected gap in quality. It converts a bet on winning into a bet on staying close, which is a materially different question.

Winning while losing The underdog loses by three on a +7 line. The bet wins comfortably while the team was beaten, which takes some adjustment to watch.

Underdog handicap bets have a psychological advantage: they are usually live deep into a game, because the margin rather than the result is what matters.

The problem arrives next. Watching your team lose while your bet wins is a real cost that nobody prices in advance, and it affects how people behave in live markets.

What to do with it. Decide beforehand that the scoreboard and the bet are separate, and avoid live markets while the two are diverging.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
