Teaser: a parlay of moved lines

A teaser is a multi-leg bet where every leg is shifted a fixed number of points in your favour, at a single reduced price for the whole slip. All legs must still win. Football teasers usually move six, six and a half or seven points; basketball teasers four, four and a half or five, and the price falls as the points rise and as legs are added.

The book is selling points wholesale rather than one at a time, and charging for them in the parlay price instead of in each leg's odds. Because the slip is priced as a unit, the cost of the points is invisible per leg — there is no line item showing what six points cost on any individual game.

What a push does to the price A three-leg six-point teaser priced at +160 is decimal 2.60, so 100 returns 260. One leg pushes on a teased whole number. At many books that slip is regraded as a two-leg teaser at the two-leg price, commonly around −110, so the same 100 now returns 190.91. At others a push loses the slip outright. Same result, two settlements, a 190.91 swing between them.

The teased line is a real line and settles like any other, which means teasing onto a whole number creates a push where none existed before. Teasing a −8.5 to −2.5 removes the push risk; teasing a −9 to −3 creates it, and whether that helps depends entirely on the book's push rule.

Which is where it goes wrong. Most people take teasers on legs chosen for the teams rather than for the numbers, then discover the push rule only when a leg lands exactly on a teased whole number. The rule is not the same everywhere and is never shown next to the price.

What to do with it. Read the push rule for the specific leg count before placing any teaser that can land on a whole number.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
