The NHL main pick on Whop: what to check on a hockey day
On days when the main pick is an NHL game, the post in Sealed picks on Whop carries the two teams, the bet and its price, the minimum price, the kickoff in Eastern Time and the hash. For hockey, kickoff means the puck drop. The notes below are about reading that post. They say nothing about how hockey picks perform.
The markets you might see
- A moneyline. Who wins, at a price. In hockey, the moneyline is usually quoted on the whole game including overtime and a shootout. Read the market description in the post rather than assuming.
- A puck line. The hockey spread, almost always 1.5 goals. What a puck line is explains why the number rarely changes and the price does the adjusting.
- A total. Over or under a combined goal count, usually around five or six. Goals are rare, so a total moves in half goals and the price carries the rest.
The goalie matters most
In hockey, one position carries more weight than any other. The starting goalie can change a price on its own. Teams often confirm their starter on the morning of the game, sometimes at the morning skate, and a late change moves lines. When a sealed pick was made before the goalie was known, read the post for any condition about it, and check who is confirmed before you bet.
Other things that move a price
- Rest and travel. Teams on consecutive nights, or after a long trip, tend to be priced differently.
- Special teams. A team that draws many power plays against one that takes many penalties can affect a total.
- Empty nets. A trailing team pulls its goalie late. That late scoring is a known reason puck line and total results can swing in the final minutes.
Timing and the minimum price
A sealed pick does not change after the hash is published. If the goalie news arrives later, the pick stays as it was and the market moves. The minimum price in the post gives you a floor. If your price is worse than the minimum, skip it. See what the minimum price line means for American-odds examples.
What to record
- The price and the line you got.
- Which goalie started.
- The final score and whether it went to overtime.
Why a hockey day can feel random
A hockey game can turn on one goal, and a goal can come from a deflection, a penalty or an empty net. That is the nature of a low-scoring sport and it is not a flaw in any particular pick. It means a sealed pick can be sound at its price and still lose, and that a streak of results in either direction says little. Keep a log, keep the stake flat and treat each day as separate.
Hockey has a small number of goals per game, so single results are noisy and a few days of them say very little. Verify a few posted days at betsbeats.com/verify and keep your stake flat: units and stake sizing has the rules. Everything here is for adults aged 21 or over, and every pick can lose.
The archive
What the published price did in the NHL
1,280 games in the NHL that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 26, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.
| What | How often | Out of | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| The shorter price won | 712 | 1,251 | 56.9% |
| The favourite covered the handicap | 451 | 1,277 | 35.3% |
| The total went over | 652 | 1,277 | 51.1% |
| The home side won | 670 | 1,280 | 52.3% |
- Points in a game, on average
- 6.29
- Winning margin, on average
- 2.25
How wide the games were
Over 1,825 finished games in the NHL with a score — a margin needs no price, so this sample is wider than the one above.
- Half were decided by this or less
- 2
- One in ten by this or more

How they ended
Over 1,824 finished games in the NHL whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.
| What | How often | Out of | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Went past regulation | 445 | 1,824 | 24.4% |
| Settled on a shootout | 154 | 1,824 | 8.4% |
1 game landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so it is in the count it is out of and in neither result.
The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
