Why bonus terms are so specific

Every clause exists because somebody found a way around the previous version. Minimum odds, excluded markets and rollover multiples are all responses to earlier arbitrage.

A bonus with no conditions can be converted into cash with near-certainty by betting both sides at different books. The terms exist to force turnover at a margin.

What the clauses are defending against Minimum odds stop the bonus being cycled through near-certain favourites. Excluded markets stop it being used where the margin is thinnest. Rollover ensures the operator collects a fee before the money can leave.

Some promotions are genuinely good value, particularly simple deposit matches with low rollover, and reading the terms is what identifies them.

What follows from that is less comfortable. The terms are the actual product and the headline is the advertisement for it, and every page is laid out to reflect which of the two is meant to be read.

What to do with it. Compute the required turnover and the vig on it, then compare that figure to the headline before accepting anything.
