Each-way and place markets

An each-way bet is two equal bets on one ticket: one on the selection to win, one on it to place. A 10 each-way costs 20. The place half pays at a stated fraction of the win odds — commonly a quarter or a fifth — over a stated number of places, and both the fraction and the place count are set by the size of the field.

It exists in field sports where the win price is long and finishing near the front is a common outcome that a win-only market pays nothing for. The place terms are not a courtesy: they are a second market with its own price, expressed as a fraction of the first so that it does not need its own board.

A 20/1 shot, each way 10 each way at 21.00 decimal (20/1), terms a fifth the odds, four places. Total stake 20. Win: the win half returns 10 × 21.00 = 210, and the place odds are a fifth of 20/1, which is 4/1, or 5.00 decimal, returning 50. Total 260, profit 240. Placed second to fourth: the win half loses 10, the place half returns 50, so 50 back on 20 staked, profit 30. Unplaced: −20.

A separate place-only market often exists alongside, and its price is set independently rather than derived as a fraction. It can be better or worse than the each-way place terms on the same selection, and the two are almost never displayed together.

That is also the expensive part. At a fifth the odds, a 5/1 selection places at 1/1 — the place half returns exactly 20 on a 20 total stake, so placing without winning breaks even and nothing shorter than 5/1 can even do that. At 4/1 the place half returns 18 against 20 staked, a guaranteed 2 lost on a horse that ran the race the bet asked it to.

What to do with it. Work out the place return at the stated fraction before placing, and check it exceeds the total stake at all.

What the published price did in US sports

11,262 games in US sports that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 24, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

How they ended

Over 16,021 finished games in US sports whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
