Race-to-X markets

A race market asks which side reaches a stated score first. Where the threshold is certain to be reached it is a two-way market with no third outcome; where it may not be, a 'neither' price exists and the market is three-way. Settlement happens the instant the number is reached, whatever the eventual result.

It prices the order of scoring rather than the amount of it, which makes it structurally unlike every other market on the page. A total asks how much; a spread asks how much more; a race asks which one gets there first, and a team can be behind on the scoreboard the whole way and still win it.

Two-way and three-way, side by side Race to 20 points in a basketball game: home −130, away +105. Implied 130 ÷ 230 = 56.52 per cent and 100 ÷ 205 = 48.78 per cent, summing to 105.30 per cent, and both teams will certainly get there. Race to three goals in a hockey game: 2.20, 2.60 and 4.00 for neither, implying 45.45, 38.46 and 25.00 per cent — 108.92 per cent, and a quarter of it sits on the game never reaching the number.

The bet finishes long before the game does. A race to 20 is settled inside the first quarter, so there is no live hedge available afterwards and no cash-out to consider — the position simply stops existing while the game continues.

The problem arrives next. Race markets get read as a proxy for the first-quarter spread and are not one. At 18-19 the trailing side wins a race to 20 by scoring next, having been behind for the entire period. Order and margin are different questions.

What to do with it. Check first whether the market has a third outcome, then read the price as a statement about scoring order rather than scoring volume.

How they ended

Over 16,021 finished games in US sports whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
