Betting a story instead of a mechanism

A factor with no causal route to points on a scoreboard has no edge attached to it. It has a highlight reel, which is memorable when it works and invisible when it does not.

Stories survive by selective recall. Every occasion the narrative held is remembered as confirmation and every occasion it failed is forgotten as noise, which makes any story unfalsifiable from the inside.

Some narratives conceal a real mechanism. Motivation around play-off seeding is genuine because coaches state their intentions and rest players accordingly, which is a fact rather than a feeling.

Which is where it goes wrong. The failure mode is identical to a curated record: nothing false is being said, and the set of remembered cases is the lie.

What to do with it. Before betting any angle, write down the physical route from the factor to the scoreboard. If you cannot write it, do not bet it.
