Tax on betting: the question is where you live, not how you bet
Whether betting winnings are taxable, and to whom, is decided by the tax law of the place you are resident in, and it varies enormously. Some jurisdictions do not tax recreational winnings at all, some tax them as income, some tax the operator instead of the customer, and some treat a person betting professionally differently from the same person betting occasionally.
The variation is not an accident of drafting. A state that taxes the operator is raising revenue at the point where it can be counted; one that taxes the customer is treating winnings as income. Those are different policy choices with different enforcement machinery, and they produce genuinely opposite answers to what looks like the same question.
It does not mean records are optional where winnings are untaxed. Deposits and withdrawals move through bank accounts, and a bank asking about a large credit is asking a question about source of funds rather than about tax.
Here is the catch. Advice found online is almost always written for one jurisdiction and does not say which. Acting on it is how somebody in one country files on rules written for another, and the mistake surfaces years later with interest attached.
What to do with it. Find the answer from your own tax authority's published guidance, or from someone qualified in your jurisdiction. Keep dated records of deposits, withdrawals and settled bets regardless — they cost nothing to keep and are impossible to reconstruct later.
