How the moneyline works in college basketball

The useful version of this is narrower than the popular one. The one place a genuine upset price appears often enough to matter, because the field is 360 teams deep and the bottom of it is barely modelled.

The moneyline is a bet on who wins, and nothing else. No handicap at all, so the whole difference between two teams sits in the price. A win by the narrowest margin and a rout settle identically.

What college basketball does to it Three hundred and sixty teams, of whom perhaps forty are good. The spread range is enormous and the bottom half of the field is barely priced at all, because barely anybody bets it.

That is also the expensive part. Heavy favourites pay back barely more than the stake, so a run of correct picks can still lose money. The price is the bet.

The competition-specific part: One player is a far larger share of a college team than of a professional one. A starting guard out is worth more here than a starter out in the NBA.

None of this says which side to take. It says what the number in front of you is made of — and a number you cannot take apart is one you are trusting rather than reading.

Over 6,487 finished games in College Basketball whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

WhatHow oftenOut ofShare

4 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
