How an alternate line works in the NFL
Start with the mechanism, not the opinion. The one sport where this market is genuinely worth studying, because the price of a half point is not constant.
An alternate line is the same market at a number you chose instead of the posted one. Moving a spread in your favour costs price and moving it against you buys price. The exchange rate between points and odds is the only thing this market is.
And that is the trap. In a sport with key numbers the exchange rate is wildly non-linear, and buying through 3 in the NFL costs several times what buying through 5 does.
The competition-specific part: One position decides more here than in any other team sport. A starting quarterback ruled out moves a spread six to nine points; nobody else on the roster moves it three.
None of this says which side to take. It says what the number in front of you is made of — and a number you cannot take apart is one you are trusting rather than reading.
