Motivation and seeding and the moneyline in college basketball

One fact does most of the work here. A team with a play-off place already secured is playing a different game to the one on the other side.

The moneyline is a bet on who wins, and nothing else, and in college basketball it behaves like this: The one place a genuine upset price appears often enough to matter, because the field is 360 teams deep and the bottom of it is barely modelled.

Where the two meet It is the only situation where a coach will openly say beforehand that winning is not the priority, which makes it unusually knowable.

The league's own contribution: A shot clock of thirty seconds against the NBA's twenty-four, so fewer possessions and totals twenty to fifty points lower for the same quality of offence.

Here is the catch. Everybody can read a standings table, so the priced version arrives before the stated version. And on this market in particular: Heavy favourites pay back barely more than the stake, so a run of correct picks can still lose money. The price is the bet.

How they ended

Over 6,487 finished games in College Basketball whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

4 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
