What a steam move means in college basketball
Start with the mechanism, not the opinion. A number moving at several books within minutes, in the same direction, without news. That is one large opinion arriving, not a crowd.
In college basketball specifically: Fifty-two games on a single Saturday in a busy month. No market can price all of them equally, and the ones nobody watches are priced by nobody.
It is the closest thing to seeing what a serious bettor did, and it is visible only because books move together to avoid being picked off.
And that is the trap. You are seeing the wake, not the boat. The price that made it worth doing is gone before the move finishes.
