Forty games
A three-game stretch is seven per cent of a WNBA season and under four per cent of an NBA one. Team ratings move faster and records mislead more.
Every rate measure needs volume, and half the games means half the observations. A mid-season reassessment is a bigger event here because there is less prior evidence to outweigh it.
The shorter season also means roster changes and injuries have proportionally larger effects on the final table.
The problem arrives next. Records look equally authoritative in both leagues and rest on materially different amounts of evidence, which is invisible in a standings page.
What to do with it. Discount WNBA records relative to NBA ones, and expect ratings to move faster on new information.
