Why 3 is the most important number in football
A field goal is three points, and it is the most common way a close NFL game is decided. The distribution of final margins has a spike there taller than anything else in American sport.
The scoring system produces the margins. A sport built from three-point and seven-point units generates final differences clustered on multiples and combinations of those two, and the largest single cluster sits on the smaller of them.
The spike has thinned slightly over the past decade as two-point attempts have become more common, which redistributes some outcomes from 7 to 8 and slightly flattens the whole shape.
And that is the trap. Because everybody knows it, the number itself is not an edge. What follows from it is: a half point either side of 3 is worth several times what a half point is worth anywhere else, and it is often sold at the same rate.
What to do with it. Treat −2.5, −3 and −3.5 as three different bets rather than three neighbouring prices, and compare them by what each does to a three-point margin.
