Weather and the total in Major League Soccer
One fact does most of the work here. Wind is the only weather that reliably moves a number. Rain and cold move it far less than instinct suggests.
The total is a bet on how much both teams score together, and in Major League Soccer it behaves like this: Low numbers mean a single goal is an enormous share of the total. The gap between 2.5 and 3.5 is a third of the whole market.
The league's own contribution: The clock never stops, and stoppage time is at the referee's discretion — the only major sport where nobody, including the participants, knows exactly when the game ends.
Here is the catch. The forecast at 9am is not the forecast at kick-off, and the number stopped moving before the weather stopped changing. And on this market in particular: Everybody's instinct is the under, because a low-scoring game feels more predictable than a high-scoring one. The market knows this, and prices it.

126 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.
The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
