Foul trouble and a player prop in college basketball

The useful version of this is narrower than the popular one. A player removed from a game he was never injured in. Five fouls in college, six in the professional leagues, and a fouled-out starter is simply gone.

A player prop is a bet on one person's output rather than on the result, and in college basketball it behaves like this: Foul trouble removes a player from a game he was never injured in, and no injury report predicts it.

Where the two meet It is the only major absence in sport that no injury report can predict and no lineup announcement precedes.

The league's own contribution: A shot clock of thirty seconds against the NBA's twenty-four, so fewer possessions and totals twenty to fifty points lower for the same quality of offence.

That is also the expensive part. It hits props hardest, because a prop assumes minutes that foul trouble deletes. And on this market in particular: A prop is correlated with the game state in ways the price often does not fully carry: a decided game changes what every player on the field is trying to do, and usually removes the minutes or the attempts the number was built on.

Over 6,487 finished games in College Basketball whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

4 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
