Reverse line movement and the spread in college basketball

The useful version of this is narrower than the popular one. The line moves toward the side most tickets are NOT on. Ticket count and money are different quantities, and the number follows money.

The spread is a handicap that makes an uneven game an even bet, and in college basketball it behaves like this: Wide range, thin markets. A Tuesday game between two teams nobody has heard of is priced by nobody, and it shows.

Where the two meet Eighty per cent of tickets on a favourite at ten dollars each is less money than twenty per cent of tickets at a thousand.

The league's own contribution: A shot clock of thirty seconds against the NBA's twenty-four, so fewer possessions and totals twenty to fifty points lower for the same quality of offence.

That is also the expensive part. Public ticket percentages are marketing numbers from whoever publishes them, and almost nobody publishes the handle that would make them mean anything. And on this market in particular: A spread that moves after you bet does not change your bet, but it does tell you the market disagreed with you and got more confident about it.

How they ended

Over 6,487 finished games in College Basketball whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

WhatHow oftenOut ofShare
Went past regulation3296,4875.1%

4 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
