Buying points without checking what they cost

The exchange rate between points and price is not constant. In football it is sharply non-linear around key numbers, and the standard rate is frequently charged regardless.

The fair price of a half point is the probability of landing on the number underneath, and margins are not uniformly distributed. So identical-looking purchases have wildly different values.

Same slip, different bets Buying −3 to −2.5 crosses the tallest bar in the NFL distribution. Buying −8 to −7.5 crosses a fraction of that. Both display as 'half a point' and both are often priced the same.

Where the rate is favourable relative to the underlying frequency this is one of the few genuinely available edges in football betting, precisely because the pricing is standardised and the distribution is not.

That is also the expensive part. Paying the standard rate at a number where the margin is rare is a straight transfer with no upside, and the standardisation is what makes it invisible.

What to do with it. Learn the key numbers of the sport you bet, and only buy through them.
