Late fouling and the total

A trailing team fouls deliberately to stop the clock, producing free throws in a game that is already decided.

Stopping the clock is the only way to manufacture possessions, and the cost is free throws. The losing team's optimal play systematically inflates the total.

Where the points come from A game decided by twelve with ninety seconds left produces four or five trips to the line and several possessions that would not otherwise exist.

It only happens in a specific band — close enough to justify fouling, far enough that the game is effectively over.

The problem arrives next. It is a structural push toward the over concentrated in the games that looked finished, which is why an under can feel lost in a game nobody is contesting.

What to do with it. Check whether the projected margin sits in the fouling band before taking an under.

What the published price did in the NBA

1,261 games in the NBA that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 25, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

How they ended

Over 1,587 finished games in the NBA whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

WhatHow oftenOut ofShare
Went past regulation771,5874.9%

4 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.

Counted November 6, 2026.
