What a total is — over and under
A total is the combined score of both teams. The bookmaker posts a number and you bet on whether the game finishes above it or below it. Who wins is irrelevant to this bet — a 3—0 and a 2—1 are the same result to it.
The unit changes with the sport, the idea does not
Points in football and basketball, runs in baseball, goals in hockey. A total in the NFL is a number in the forties; in the NBA it is a number in the two hundreds; in baseball it is usually somewhere around eight or nine. The market is identical in all of them.
Whole numbers can push
If the line is 44.0 and the two teams combine for exactly 44, the bookmaker voids the bet and returns the stake. That is neither a win nor a loss, and if it happens to a main pick, the day is re-run at no cost.
A total has a price too, and both parts move
Over 224.5 at 1.87 and Over 224.5 at 1.95 are different bets. So are Over 224.5 and Over 226.5. Totals are especially sensitive to news that arrives late — a pitcher scratched, a starter rested, wind at the ballpark — so the number you see in the morning is often not the number at tip-off. Read the line on the card, not only the word "over".
Narrower versions exist: a team total covers one side's score alone, a first-half total only part of the game. Our picks always name the exact scope in the side; if your bookmaker is showing you a different one, it is a different bet.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.
The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
