Spread / handicap
When one side is far better than the other, betting on them to win pays almost nothing. The spread fixes that: it gives the weaker side an artificial head start and takes the same amount off the stronger one, so the bet becomes interesting again in both directions.
It is why the half-point turns up again: at −4.0 and a win by exactly 4, the bet would be void. In football you will meet it as the "Asian handicap", sometimes in quarters (−0.25, −0.75), which split your stake across two lines — the same principle, finer grained.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.
The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
