What the minus and plus signs actually mark

On a handicap they mark direction — who is giving points and who is receiving them. On a price they mark which side of even money the odds sit. Same symbol, two unrelated jobs.

The notation is historical and overloaded. Nothing in the interface distinguishes the two uses, and both appear on the same row within a few characters of each other.

The misread '−3.5 (−115)' reads to a newcomer as doubly negative and therefore doubly bad. It is a handicap of three and a half points at a price of 115 to win 100, and the two numbers are on different scales.

Decimal odds remove half the confusion by never using a sign on the price, which is one reason they are the format of choice for anybody doing arithmetic.

What follows from that is less comfortable. The two meanings are learned quickly and misapplied under pressure, particularly when comparing offers across books in different formats.

What to do with it. Say each number out loud in words before betting: 'giving three and a half, at risk one-fifteen to win a hundred'.

What the published price did in US sports

11,262 games in US sports that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 24, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

How they ended

Over 16,021 finished games in US sports whose result line says how it ended — the feed's own one-line verdict, not a reading of the play.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
