Which way a move points
A handicap growing on one side means money came in on that side, or the book's own view moved there. The direction is public; the reason is not.
Lines move for exactly two categories of reason, and both produce identical visible changes. What you can observe is that the market's balance point shifted and roughly by how much.
Movement across a key number is more meaningful than movement of the same size elsewhere, because crossing it costs the book more.
What follows from that is less comfortable. Almost everything sold about interpreting line movement is inference presented as observation, and the inference cannot be checked afterwards.
What to do with it. Record the opening and closing number for the games you bet, and use the pattern over time rather than reading any single move.

11,262 games in US sports that are over and carried a price when we wrote them up, between November 24, 2025 and November 6, 2026. Each count sits beside what it is out of, and the share is the one divided by the other.

286 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.
The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
