Seventeen games is almost nothing
A full NFL season is fewer games than a baseball team plays in three weeks. Almost nothing about an NFL team is statistically settled at any point in the year.
Every rate statistic needs volume to stabilise, and seventeen observations is below the threshold for nearly all of them. What looks like a team's identity is frequently a handful of results.
Some things do stabilise quickly — offensive line performance, pace, tendencies on early downs. Those are the measures worth using because they need fewer observations, not because they are more interesting.
Here is the catch. Every narrative in football is built on samples too small to distinguish a good team from a lucky one, and the narratives are extremely well told.
What to do with it. Weight preseason expectations far longer into the year than feels natural, and update on process measures rather than on records.
