Taking a future off before it settles
A futures bet placed at a long price can be closed out by backing the other side once the field narrows, locking a profit that is smaller than the original bet's but certain. The arithmetic is fixed: to guarantee an equal outcome, the hedging stake is the original potential return divided by the hedge's decimal price.
A futures price is a claim on a distant outcome, and the market reprices it continuously as the season resolves. That repricing is what creates the opportunity: a bet taken at 25.00 in September may be facing a 2.50 counterpart in May, and the gap between what you hold and what it now costs to sell is a real, bankable amount that has nothing to do with who eventually wins.
It does not mean hedging is always correct. Guaranteeing an outcome gives up the expectation you were paid for taking, and if the original price was genuinely good, hedging at a bad one converts a good bet into a mediocre certainty.
Which is where it goes wrong. The hedge is placed by feel — 'take some off the table' — rather than calculated, which produces a position that is neither the original bet nor a locked one, and nobody can say afterwards what it was supposed to be.
What to do with it. If you hedge, calculate the stake rather than estimating it, and decide in advance whether you are locking the whole position or a stated fraction of it.
Work it out. The hedge calculator gives the stake that evens out the result for any two prices, and what is left on each side.
