Bowl games are frequently a different sport
Opt-outs, transfers and interim coaching staffs mean the teams playing are often not the teams that qualified. The roster is the whole question.
Players protecting draft status sit out, others enter the transfer portal, and a fired coach is replaced by an interim for one game. None of that is reflected in season-long data.
Motivation genuinely differs between bowls in a way it does not during a season, and it is one of the few situations where a coach will say so publicly beforehand.
And that is the trap. Season statistics are at their most persuasive and least applicable exactly here, because the sample describes a roster that no longer exists.
What to do with it. Read the participation and opt-out list before anything else, and discard season ratings that assume the full squad.
