Games bought rather than earned
Large programmes pay smaller schools to visit. The result is a fixture with no competitive premise, priced by a market that barely engages with it.
The financial arrangement is public and routine — a guarantee payment in exchange for a road game nobody expects to be close. The visiting team's goal is the cheque and the players' health.
Occasionally these produce genuine upsets, and when they do the reason is almost always the favourite's own personnel decisions rather than the underdog's quality.
Which is where it goes wrong. These are the games where the market is thinnest and the outcome least about football, which is a combination that attracts confident opinions.
What to do with it. Treat guarantee games as questions about a coach's fourth quarter, and note that limits on them are usually low for a reason.
