What a line that moved means in the NFL
Most of what gets said about this is downstream of one detail. A number that moves has been argued with by people risking money. It is the only public signal in betting that costs something to send.
In the NFL specifically: A week between games means every injury is reported, every line is fully formed by Thursday, and the market has more time on an NFL game than on anything else.
Movement without news is the interesting kind. Movement after an injury report is just everybody reading the same page at the same time.
What follows from that is less comfortable. Chasing a moved line means paying the price the movement created. By the time it is visible, the thing that caused it is priced.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
