A 42-point college football spread is not a prediction of a 42-point win

College football will hand you a Saturday where a team is favoured by forty-two points. In the NFL a number that size does not exist and has never existed. The talent gap between a playoff programme and a team fulfilling a scheduling contract is simply wider than anything professional sport allows.

The mistake is reading it as a prediction. A spread is not the expected margin. It is the number that splits the money. At −42 the market is not saying "we expect a 42-point win". It is saying that above and below that number the two piles of unknowns weigh the same.

Why the unknowns are so heavy here Whether the starters play the fourth quarter. Whether the coach is sitting on the ball at 45–3 or throwing at 52–3. Whether a backup quarterback with two career passes goes in at the half. None of these are facts about football ability, all of them are worth two touchdowns, and none of them are announced.

This is why huge spreads are, in a real sense, less knowable than small ones, not more. In a game decided by three points you are handicapping football. In a game decided by forty you are handicapping a coach's manners in the fourth quarter, and there is no statistic for that.

The totals move with them and for the same reason. A 45-point favourite scoring at will produces a first half that sails over and a second half where the clock never stops moving, and a total built for a normal game meets neither.

Nothing here says which side to take. It says that the biggest, loudest, most confident-looking numbers on the board are the ones carrying the most hidden variance — and that a number's size is not a measure of how sure anybody is.

5 games landed exactly on the number — the handicap or the total — so they are in the counts they are out of and in neither result.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.

A season that happened. Nothing here predicts the next game, and none of it is advice.
