Eighty-two games makes NBA ratings the sharpest in American sport
It is the largest useful sample in North American team sport, and team efficiency measures stabilise faster here than in any other league on this board.
Rate statistics need volume, and basketball provides both a long season and a hundred possessions a game. Two seasons of NFL data contains fewer meaningful observations than a month of NBA data.
Reliability of ratings is not the same as predictability of games. Individual results remain highly variable; it is the estimate of team strength that is solid.
And that is the trap. A sharper market is a harder market. The best-measured sport is also the one where an edge from public information is least likely to exist.
What to do with it. Do not expect to beat NBA sides on team quality. If there is an edge here it is in rotations, rest decisions and situational pace.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
