Officiating crews and the total
Crews differ measurably in how often they call fouls, and fouls become free throws, which are points and stopped clock.
A tightly called game produces more trips to the line and more possessions; a loose one produces fewer of both. Across a full game the difference is worth a few points on a total.
The effect is small relative to pace and personnel, and crews regress toward the league average over time rather than maintaining extreme tendencies.
And that is the trap. It feels like inside knowledge, which is exactly the category of input people over-weight. A small effect applied confidently is worse than no adjustment.
What to do with it. Use it as a tiebreaker on a total you already liked, never as the reason for one.
