Home advantage in basketball, and why it is not three points
Worth roughly two to three points in the NBA, and steadier across the league than the football equivalent.
Crowd effects on officiating, familiarity with the arena and the absence of travel all contribute. In basketball the effect is smaller in magnitude than football's but more consistent between teams.
It is not uniform. Altitude, travel distance for the visitor and specific arena characteristics move it, and a few venues are measurably stronger than the league average.
Which is where it goes wrong. Three points is an NFL number. Importing it into basketball, or a basketball number into soccer, is the most common cross-sport error there is.
What to do with it. Use the sport's own figure, and check whether the specific venue is an outlier before adjusting further.

The prices counted here are DraftKings', as they stood when we last wrote each game up — one snapshot per game, near kick-off for almost all of them, and never a closing line. So this says what the published line did, not how it moved on the way there.
