Overtime sits on a number priced for forty-eight minutes
Five extra minutes of live scoring, included on every standard total. A tied game at the buzzer with the total exactly on the line has not pushed — it is about to go over.
Regulation is forty-eight minutes and the market prices the full game including any extra periods, because that is when the bet settles. Readers price the game they watched.
Multiple overtimes compound it, and while rare they are not negligible over a season of totals.
Here is the catch. Almost every posted total includes overtime and almost every reader mentally prices forty-eight minutes, which is a systematic bias toward the under in the reader's head and not in the number.
What to do with it. When a game is close late and the total is near the line, remember the bet is not over at the buzzer.
